Hydrogen in Egypt

Extreme weather caused by climate change threatens human life and the sustainable development of the society. Human activities produce greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming at a rate faster than at any time in the past two thousand years. In particular, the burning of fossil fuels (such as coal and natural gas, etc.) releases a large amount of carbon emissions. Such emissions are the dominant cause of global temperature rise and have brought about more extreme weather events.

Egypt has pubilshed the Strategic Hydrogen Plan, click here for details. It has targets to reduce carbon emissions considerably in order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality before 2050. To achieve this decarbonisation goal, it is imperative to strive to phase out fossil fuels and actively develop new low-carbon energy sources that are clean and efficient. In the pursuit of carbon neutrality, the promotion of hydrogen energy is gaining traction internationally, and the development of new energy transport has become a growing trend.

DEBCO has initiated and is involved in conducting a feasibility study for transforming diesel powered heavy vehicles to hydrogen. A consortium  with HYGRO and SoluForce has entered into a strategic partnership with Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) to develop and distribute green hydrogen. See press release here.

green hydrogen.

Hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy (such as solar energy and wind energy) through electrolysis, and transported through compressed storage, refrigerated storage or pipeline to provide clean energy to users. It is highly energy-efficient and less polluting, and is reduced to water only after combustion without emissions. It can be used as a fuel for transportation, heating and power generation, etc. In the field of transportation, compared to pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) vehicles or vehicles with hydrogen combustion engines require less batteries, and the batteries are smaller and lighter. That being the case, hydrogen energy can help reduce the demand for battery disposal in future and support wider application to heavy vehicles.

Hydrogen is considered one of the most important energy sources and industries that countries around the world focus on. Egypt will very soon come up with a medium- and long-term plan for the development of the hydrogen energy industry (2024-2035), the Strategic Hydrogen Plan, which states that hydrogen will be an important part of the national energy system in the future.
